The Hunter

The Hunter by Tana French ranks among the best books I have read this year. The second installment in French’s Cal Hooper series is just as atmospheric and engaging as the first.

Tired of gangs and senseless murders, Cal Hooper retired early from the Chicago Police Department and moved to rural Ireland, far away from big-city violence. He’s worked hard to restore a dilapidated cottage he bought online and build a new, peaceful life. He’s also built a relationship with a local woman, Lena, and is proud of his strides in transforming Trey Reddy from a troubled teenage girl into a good kid with a future.

With the blazing summer drought bearing down hard, the locals are praying for a miracle. Crops are suffering, farmers are worried about their livestock, and tempers are fraying. When Trey’s long-absent father shows up with an English millionaire and a scheme to find gold in the community’s river, folks think their prayers have been answered. But Cal knows a con when he sees one. And a con artist.

The Hunter asks the hard questions: What would we do for those

we love, and how far are we willing to go for revenge?

And what if one demands the other?

Cal and Lena don’t have gold fever. They’re suffering a different malady: fear that everything they’ve been building together is in jeopardy. They’re ready to do whatever it takes to save Trey from being hurt or her future trashed by her shady father. Unfortunately for Cal and Lena, Trey doesn’t want protection. She wants revenge.

The Hunter asks the hard questions: What would we do for those we love, and how far are we willing to go for revenge? And what if one demands the other? The novel is a spectacular example of an atmospheric tale. The setting—from the low pastures dotted with sheep to the mountain with its terrifying bogs—is powerful. The series is full of eccentric characters with secrets, problems, and unfulfilled dreams.

The Hunter is an outstanding sequel to The Searcher, and New York Times Bestselling author Tana French is on top of her game. In addition to her Cal Hooper books, she’s also the author of the The Dublin Murder Squad series. If you’re not put off by strong language, I highly recommend The Hunter.
